The Wharf - Orange Beach, Alabama

Description

THE WHARF (http://www.TheWharfAL.com) is a mixed-use development which opened in 2006 and will be the dominant retail and entertainment node for the 32 miles of sugar white beaches of Baldwin County, Alabama. Made up of Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, Fort Morgan and Perdido Key, this area has experienced phenomenal growth in the past decade, with development outpacing all other communities along the northern coastline of the Gulf of Mexico. With a resident and visitor population of 4.6 million people per year, demand is high for a landmark development such as The Wharf.

The Wharf is situated along the south side of the Intracoastal Waterway on the Foley Beach Expressway, which has changed the area by offering the fastest route to the beaches. Encompassing approximately 225 beautiful acres on both sides of the Expressway, the project’s 350,000 square feet of retail will include several national retail anchors, and a collection of shops, boutiques and restaurants on a boardwalk along the Intercoastal Waterway. In addition to retail space, The Wharf will offer a full service marina that will be able to accommodate boats up to 100 feet. The entertainment area will include south Baldwin County’s first stadium seating movie theater, and a restaurant and nightlife plaza overlooking the Intercoastal Waterway. Hotels and condominiums will round out the development, giving the mixed-use development a true “lifestyle” experience, and boaters a protected harbor with access to the Gulf of Mexico.

The driving force behind The Wharf is the fast-growing tourism industry. From 1994 to 2002, annual lodging and retail tax revenue for Gulf Shores and Orange Beach increased from $7.2 million to $17.7 million. Travel related expenditures in Baldwin County were $1.7 billion in 2002. The Orange Beach and Gulf Shores area ranked #1 in 2002 among communities along the northern Gulf coastline in both Lodging Rental Market Share and Lodging Sales Volume, outpacing Florida’s Seaside, Destin, Fort Walton, Sandestin, Grayton Beach, Panama City Beach, and Pensacola Beach! The tourism boom will be further enhanced by the new $110 million Gulf Shores State Park Convention Center, which will give the area convention facilities unsurpassed by any of the other communities listed. With over 22 million people within an 8 hour drive, The Wharf and the new Convention Center will complement each other in drawing visitors from throughout the South.
